Carbon Literacy for the healthcare sector

  • The Carbon Literacy course is designed to equip any healthcare professional with the understanding, skills, and confidence to comprehend, act, and lead the response to climate change within their day-to-day practice.

Our aim is to provide you with the knowledge, motivation, and tools needed to integrate environmental sustainability into clinical, care, and organisational decision-making, contributing to higher-quality healthcare that is more efficient and aligned with the challenges of the 21st century.

Reducing the environmental impact of the healthcare system is not only a global responsibility, but also a direct opportunity to improve people’s health, optimise resources, and strengthen the resilience of the system.

  • The Carbon Literacy Project is one of the largest international initiatives driving cultural change towards a low-carbon society. Originating in the United Kingdom, it is now delivered in more than 47 countries and across over 16 sectors, with more than 150,000 people certified worldwide.

It has been recognised by the United Nations as one of the 100 most transformative climate action initiatives globally under the COP21 framework.

  • Our course is specifically tailored to the healthcare environment, combining scientific knowledge with practical application in clinical and care settings.

    Throughout the training, we explore:

    • Key concepts of climate change and health

    • The healthcare sector’s carbon footprint and its main sources of emissions

    • Climate policies and the health action framework

    • The role of healthcare professionals as agents of change

    • Sustainability as a driver of innovation in healthcare delivery

  • Beyond knowledge, this course is designed to drive action.

The aim is for each participant to be able to identify and implement changes at individual, team, and organisational levels that make a real contribution to reducing emissions and improving the healthcare system.

It is not just about understanding the problem, but about becoming part of the solution.

  • Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project, recognising their training as Carbon Literate.

  • This course is open to all professionals working in the healthcare sector, regardless of their role or level of experience. From clinical staff to management teams, everyone has a key role to play in the transition towards a more sustainable healthcare system.
